BED BUG HISTORY AND BROKEN ARROW, PEST CONTROL

Bed bugs enjoy a long sorrid history with humans. We have writings from many different civilizations that reference them. There are cave paintings that show bed bugs on their walls, there are Egyptian hieroglyphics that mention bed bugs. We also have writings from the Romans that talk about climexa, which is the Latin word for Bed bug. The middle ages had love potions that used bed bugs as an ingredient.

It’s believe that when we were still cave dwelling people, we would sleep underneath many bats that were roosting above us. Those bats were victimized by the bat bug. If you saw that bug next to a bed bug, you would not be able to tell the difference. At some point, entomologists believe that some of these bat bugs, crawled down the side of the walls and start feeding on humans. This gave them a taste for human blood, and the first bed bugs were born.

Fast forward to the 1940s. All of a sudden a new pesticide showed up on the horizon. DDT was a miracle chemical that was taking the pest control world by storm. Everything was dying with DDT. People would take the substance and hose down their beds and sheets with them in an effort to kill bed bugs. And it worked marvelously. Bed bug populations declined so much, that they almost went completely extinct. But then unfortunately, scientists realize that DDT causes cancer. Because it was a carcinogenic, it was banned from use and taken off the shelves. It’s at this point that the bed bug started to make a come back. Every year since then bed bugs have been more and more prolific. Contact your Broken Arrow pest control company for help with bed bugs.

BED BUG TREATMENT AND BROKEN ARROW PEST CONTROL

There are many over-the-counter treatments available for bed bugs. Unfortunately, almost all of them are completely ineffective. The biggest problem with most of these over-the-counter solutions is that they use pyrethrins to try to kill these bugs. Pyrethrins are a family of pesticides that are derived from a natural pesticide found in the chrysanthemum plant. These pesticides were used steadily against bed bugs back in the 90s. Unfortunately, bed bugs are quite adept at growing an immunity to any kind of a pesticide. Because of this, bed bugs today are all but killed from this pesticide.

In order to treat bed bugs effectively, it’s best if we can treat them from multiple different angles. One of those treatments is a heat treatment. While many companies will come in and bring large heating units in order to heat up the entire house, we found that smaller localized treatments are better. The goal is to get these bed bugs over 120°F. While large heating units may be able to get the inside air that hot, getting to the center of a mattress or inside a wall that hot is much more difficult. Using a steamer for localized treatment is a much better option. Also, your clothing can be put through the dryer on high heat getting them far above the 120° threshold that’s needed. Contact your Broken Arrow pest control company for help with this kind of treatment.

BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL CONTROLS

Biological controls can be very effective against bed bugs. These Biological control is using a natural predator of the bed bug against it. Here at TermMax pest control, we use a product known as Aprehend. This product is essentially the spore of a fungus that’s a natural predator to the bed bug. It’s applied to the box springs and bed frames. As these bugs travel across them, they pick up these spores. They’ll go back to the harborage place and spread the spores around to all of their friends. The spores will germinate and work their way underneath the exoskeleton, feeding on the bed bug itself. Within time, these bed bugs will be wiped out. The best part is there’s no way for bed bugs build up an immunity to this kind of control.

Chemical controls can be affective as well. While they must be varied, they can work quite effectively. As stated above, pyrethrins are not the correct chemical to use against the bed bug, but there are many other chemicals that are available that can be used. The tricky part with dealing with bed bugs is that they are in our beds. This is a place with high skin contact. So it’s important that you’re using a chemical that’s safe and applied properly in order to protect the people sleeping in those beds. Your Broken Arrow pest control company will have all the tools necessary to do the job right. It’s important to contact them and get them on the scene to help with any bed bug situation.
