INDOOR COCKROACHES AND BROKEN ARROW PEST CONTROL

Here in northeast Oklahoma, we have four predominant types of cockroaches to become a pest. The first two are indoor cockroaches. The German cockroach is the most prolific of these pests. We see more German cockroach infestations than any other type of cockroach infestation. These insects are a brownish color about 3/4 of an inch long and have yellow markings directly behind their head. The German cockroach is unique in the fact that when it lays its eggs, it actually lays them in an egg sack and carries that egg sack upon its back. All other cockroach species will find a crack or crevice to lay their eggs inside of and hide. Once the eggs of the German cockroach hatch, they will be on their own and the female will move on.

The next indoor cockroach that we have are the brown banded cockroaches. These cockroaches look much the same as the German cockroaches, with the exception of three yellow bands around their abdomen. These cockroaches prefer to be higher up on the wall, and are often found behind wall hangings and clocks. While the German cockroach does not use its wings, the brown banded cockroach will use them to flutter down in a controlled fall if they are threatened. Both of these cockroaches are pantry pests and will get into your food and dirty dishes. It’s important to keep them out of your home. OUTDOOR COCKROACHES AND BROKEN ARROW PEST CONTROL

The last two types of cockroaches that we find in Oklahoma as pests are our outdoor cockroaches. The first one of these is the American cockroach. This large cockroach is almost 3 inches long and brown in color. It’s quite a sight if you happen to walk up on one. They’re large and kind of scary but in reality they’re more scared of us than anything else. These cockroaches can’t really do anything to us, and are bottom feeders that tend to eat dead animal and plant material. We find them often in sewers and drain pipes. If you’re seeing American cockroaches in your home, the most likely problem is that you have a foundation leak or a plumbing line is broken open.

Oriental cockroaches are also outdoor cockroaches. These are a little bit shorter than the American cockroach, at about 2 1/2 inches in length and are black in color. These cockroaches love dead plant material. They are often found in drainage ditches, and seldom make their way inside. But when they do, it’s usually a sign that you have a broken plumbing line or drain. Moisture is a big factor when it comes to these outdoor cockroaches. If you have a lot of humidity or moisture, this can also track them into your home. Contact your Broken Arrow pest control company if you are having a problem with any of these cockroaches.

SANITATION AND BROKEN ARROW PEST CONTROL

Your number one defense against these insects is sanitation. Maintaining a clean home with low clutter can make all the world of difference. If you leave your dirty dishes out overnight, these cockroaches will come out and feed upon the food particles that they can find on your dishes and plates. They’ll drink from the water in your sink and drains. If food is left out or spilled on the floor, this can be a buffet for these insects. Often teenagers will leave their plates of unfinished food underneath their bed or an open Dorito bag. All these things can attract cockroaches into your home.

In many cases, when a cockroach problem is discovered, most people will go to the hardware store and get a can of their favorite pesticide. These over-the-counter pesticides are not the best idea when dealing with cockroaches. They have two parts to them. They have a knock down agent and a repellent pesticide. The knockdown agent doesn’t last very long, and is simply there to kill the bugs on contact if you spray one directly. The repellent pesticide will last much longer and is an irritant to these insects. If they touch it, they will not like it, so they’ll back away from it and stay away.

If you overspray these sprays, then the cockroaches will hide in wall gaps and behind appliances where you can’t get to them. As they wait for the pesticide to break down, they will continue to reproduce and increase in numbers. When it’s all said and done, you will have many more cockroaches than when you started, compounding the problem. Contact your Broken Arrow pest control company for help with cockroaches.
