Your Broken Arrow Exterminator can help you eradicate fleas and other pests from your home. Fleas are small, wingless insects. A flea is an insect that lives in the furs and feathers of animals and sometimes humans. They are ectoparasites and they suck the blood of the animals they bite. They are about 1-6 mm long, depending on the species.

The females are bigger than the males. Their bites can cause discomfort, itchiness, and irritation. Sometimes, fleas can infect people or pets with the germs that cause flea-borne typhus, plague, or cat scratch disease. Additionally, they hitchhike from one pet to another and can transmit diseases from one to another. It is important to curb their spread by making sure all stages of life of fleas are eliminated. The Life Cycle of Fleas

The beginning of the life cycle occurs when an adult female flea lays eggs following a blood meal from the host. Blood is necessary for their development. These eggs are small and white and are laid in the pet’s fur in bunches of about 20. A single adult female can lay about 40 eggs every day.

Eggs take from two days to two weeks to develop. It hatches when environmental conditions are just right for them. If temperatures are cold and dry, the eggs will take longer, if temperatures are warm and humidity levels are high, the eggs will hatch at a faster rate. Larvae then emerges as the next life stage. The emerging larvae are blind and will avoid being out in the light. They develop over several weeks by eating pre-digested blood known as flea “dirt” that adult fleas pass, along with other organic debris in the environment.

Larvae make up about 35 percent of the flea population in the average household. If conditions are favorable, the larvae will spin cocoons in about 5-20 days of hatching their eggs. This leads to the next life stage, called the cocoon or pupa stage. The pupal stage of the flea life cycle accounts for about 10 percent of the flea population in a home. This cocoon stage is the last developmental stage before the adult flea emerges. The cocoon protects the pupae for several days or weeks before the adult flea emerges. New adult fleas have a flat-bodied appearance and are very small and dark in color. Contact your Broken Arrow exterminator
