Flying and stinging insects like wasps are a threat to us when they invade our space but they can also be controlled by your Tulsa Exterminator. Wasps belong to the order, Hymenoptera. They are similar to bees but have distinct characteristics that differentiate them. However, they are both social insects and live in colonies. Wasps like yellowjackets may be mistaken for bees because of their yellow and black color. They are often seen during the summer. They can be a problem when they build their nests in our homes but Tulsa Exterminator is here to help if they need to be removed.

Where Do Wasps Go During Winter?

You must have noticed that you hardly spot a wasp during winter or snowy weather. This is because wasps can not survive in low temperatures. Also, they mostly feed on nectar from flowers, and most flowers bloom during the spring and summer seasons. However, during winter, wasps go into hiding in holes in the ground, the bark of logs, or hidden dark quiet places where they won’t be disturbed and hibernate. These places they hide help keep them warm throughout winter. They barely feed during this period so some wasps might die of hunger or cold if exposed to the weather.

During hibernation, their temperature drops, and their rate of metabolism is reduced to the barest minimum. It will help keep them alive and maximize the available nutrients their body has and use them to survive the winter season. After winter, when the weather starts getting warmer, they emerge from hibernation, mostly the queen wasps. It then finds a suitable location to build a nest and lay her eggs.

Wasp Nest and Tulsa Exterminator

Wasp nests provide a safe breeding home for wasp colonies to reproduce and protect their queen. It is where the queen lays her eggs and also where she keeps and cares for her young ones. The nests are also used for storage spaces where the wasps store other insects and nectar.

Paper wasp nests have a paper-like texture that is made from chewed fibers and then mixed with their saliva. The nests differ in size and shape. Some of them look like an umbrella like the ones made by paper wasps. Some others are made from mud into a capsule-like structure by wasps like the mud daubers. They prefer to nest under eaves, trees, or underground. They select the place based on the elements and predators.

Interestingly, wasps are only active in warmer weather or seasons. Wasp nests are started by the queen in spring and it grows throughout the summer. In late fall, the colony dies off but only a few queens survive and make colonies in a new fresh nest somewhere else. Only one queen can start the colony and it can grow to hundreds at the end of summer. This is a problem when they build their nests close to our homes but your Tulsa exterminator can help you remove them. Check out our reviews!
