Restaurants have a lot of food and waste that the cockroaches love to feed upon. Because of this, it’s important to have a good integrated pest management system implemented in your restaurant. Let’s take a good hard look at cockroaches, their lifecycle, and how you can work with your Tulsa exterminator to eliminate these insects.
COCKROACH TYPES AND TULSA EXTERMINATOR
There are a few different kinds of cockroaches that we commonly see here in Oklahoma. The most common cockroach seen in restaurants is the German cockroach. These cockroaches are about 3/4 of an inch long and brown in color. They has a pronotum that has lighter brown outline, makes it distinct from other cockroaches. German cockroaches are unique in the fact that they carry their ootheca or egg sack around with them as opposed to finding a place to hide it and leaving it for the young defend for themselves. Most restaurant situations are going to be dealing with this pantry pest.
The brown banded cockroach is the second most prolific cockroach that we see in Oklahoma restaurants. This insect is also brown in color and about the same size as a German cockroach. Its unique in the fact that it has a light brown ring around its abdomen. Brown banded cockroaches are commonly found higher up on the wall, behind pictures and other wall hangings. These insects are also pantry pests. Contact your Tulsa exterminator for help.
AMERICAN COCKROACH AND TULSA EXTERMINATOR
While the first two cockroach types are commonly found in Oklahoma restaurants, the next two cockroaches can also be found in restaurants, or any other businesses, but are not necessarily found in your pantry. The American cockroach is the largest cockroach that we commonly see. These cockroaches are around 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and a slight brown in color. These insects don’t feed upon the food that we find in our pantries, but are more commonly seen in wet areas such as cellars, basements and anywhere that there is plumbing that’s possibly broken. In fact, if you’re seeing these insects, it’s a good idea to have your plumbing checked to make sure that there are no leaks anywhere. These cockroaches are bottom feeders and like to feed upon waist and organic refuse.
The oriental cockroach is the last of the common cockroaches found in Oklahoma restaurants. This cockroach is black in color and a little smaller than the American cockroach. We see this in most cases in the wild in drainage ditches, and on the sides of bodies of water. If you see these insects in your restaurant or business that you probably have a plumbing issue. Cellars can also be susceptible to these insects. Your Tulsa exterminator can get you cockroach free in no time!
COCKROACH DEFENSE AND TULSA EXTERMINATOR
Roaches find themselves at the bottom of the food chain. They are food for many other kinds of predators. Because of this, they have to protect themselves and their species from going extinct. What are the main ways that they do this? Cockroaches will reproduce very quickly. The German cockroach’s ootheca can carry up to 50 to 60 eggs in it. in a year, this cockroach can produce many oothecas. Because of this, roaches problems can compound very quickly. Because of this, it is important to get in contact with your Tulsa exterminator as soon as you see roach in your restaurant.
It’s highly advise for restaurant owners to have an integrated pest management plan in place in order to take care of these pests before they arrive. This is a plan that you can come up with with your Tulsa Exterminator to stay on top of your pest problems and keep them out of your restaurant. In most cases, this will include a monthly treatment and deterrence for both cockroaches and mice. It also will include ways of exclusion or limiting the entry and access points that pests commonly use to get in and out of your building.
COCKROACH SPEED AND TULSA EXTERMINATOR
For their size, cockroaches are actually very fast. Because of their six legs and the way that they move, they can cover a lot of ground very quickly. They are also very good climbers, and swimmers. All these traits help the cockroach to survive.
Many people have heard the old adage that if you cut off the head of a cockroach, it will survive. This is actually true to an extent. The brain of the cockroach is not contained in the head like it is in mammals. It’s actually an organ that’s across the entirety of its body. So because of this, when you cut off your head, you’re not separating the brain from the rest of the body. Now without the head, they have no way of sensing their surroundings through their feelers and eyes, nor do they have a mouth I can eat with anymore. Because of this, the cockroach will eventually die by becoming food for some predator or starving death.
